Pokhara, 5 November.
The Nepali communist movement witnessed a landmark event on Wednesday, as ten distinct communist factions formally merged, a development which the Convenor of the unified Nepali Communist Party, Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, has declared an “unforgettable historic day” for the movement. Addressing the party unity declaration assembly, Prachanda asserted that the simultaneous unification of possibly ten different communist groups marks a first in the annals of Nepali communist history, a feat he labeled as truly “unprecedented”. This massive consolidation of communist forces is anticipated to have significant ramifications for the nation’s political landscape, potentially shifting the balance of power and offering a unified front to tackle pressing national challenges.
During his address, Prachanda emphasized the monumental significance of the occasion, stating, “Today will be a day the Nepali communist movement will never forget in history. The fact that possibly ten factions united in a single day, an integration achieved by leaders who have undergone ideological struggles in their respective spheres, is truly unprecedented.” He highlighted that this unification is not a mere political maneuver but a culmination of ideological and practical struggles of various leaders and groups, all converging to revitalize the communist ideology in Nepal. This comprehensive merger, he believes, is poised to inject new vigor into the movement and provide a more cohesive political direction for the future.
Furthermore, Prachanda broadened the scope of the merger’s importance beyond the immediate communist circle. He elaborated, “This is not just historically significant from the perspective of communist movement unity alone. This is also an extraordinary day that lays the foundation for national unity to resolve the challenges and crises currently visible in Nepali politics.” This assertion strongly suggests that the newly formed unified party intends to position itself as a central pillar for resolving national issues, advocating for broader national solidarity to overcome current political and socio-economic hurdles. Prachanda framed the unity as an essential step toward safeguarding national interests and sovereignty in a time of political fluidity.
The convenor expressed immense pride in the achievement, acknowledging the commitment and hard work of all the participating leaders and cadres. He firmly stated, “This is a matter of pride for all of us. This day will not be forgotten in history, no matter who tries to make us forget it.” This statement underlines the deep conviction and mutual respect underpinning the unity process. Political analysts are closely observing this development, speculating on how this ten-party amalgamation will reshape the dynamics of Nepali politics, particularly in terms of policy formulation, governance, and electoral performance. The unification is seen by many as an attempt at the political and ideological re-centralization of the splintered communist movement. The new party’s strategic direction, organizational structure, and engagement with other political forces will be key indicators of its long-term impact. Prachanda’s emphasis was clear: the unity transcends mere numbers, embodying a renewed commitment to revolutionary principles and the fulfillment of the aspirations of the Nepali people for development and prosperity.
