Pokhara, 23 February | The Election Commission of Nepal has officially urged local level representatives to refrain from participating in election campaigning to ensure the upcoming polls are conducted in a free, fair, and transparent manner. Highlighting the implementation of the Election Code of Conduct, 2082, the Commission reminded all stakeholders that adhering to these regulations is a primary responsibility. In a formal statement issued on Sunday, the regulatory body emphasized that maintaining an environment characterized by independence, fairness, transparency, and economy is vital for the integrity of the democratic process. The Commission specifically cautioned officials of local executives against involving themselves in promotional activities within the local levels where they are currently holding office, as such actions could compromise the neutrality of the election.

The Commission noted with serious concern that several complaints and grievances have been received regarding certain local representatives participating in political rallies and campaigns in violation of the prescribed code. It stated that rigorous monitoring is currently underway to track the activities of political parties, candidates, and related entities. According to the specific provisions within the Election Code of Conduct, while local executive members are permitted to participate in the election campaigns of their respective political parties in regions other than their own jurisdiction, they are strictly prohibited from utilizing any government resources or facilities. This includes the use of official vehicles, equipment, or any public funds during such activities to prevent any undue advantage or misuse of state machinery.

Furthermore, the Election Commission has alerted all local executive officials to strictly avoid any form of participation in the election publicity of any political party or candidate within their own local level. The move is intended to prevent the potential influence of administrative power on voters and to uphold the sanctity of the electoral system. The Commission warned that any breach of these regulations would lead to legal consequences as per the existing laws. By issuing this timely reminder, the Commission aims to curb the misuse of public office for political gains and encourages representatives to maintain the highest standards of ethical conduct. This directive serves as a crucial step in reinforcing public confidence in the electoral outcome and ensuring that the democratic exercise remains untainted by the influence of those in power.
