Pokhara, 25 December| Chairman of the CPN-UML, KP Sharma Oli, has stated that his party is fully prepared to participate in the elections provided the government creates a suitable and fair environment. Speaking at an event in Kathmandu on Thursday, Oli emphasized that the responsibility of creating an election-friendly atmosphere lies solely with the government. He asserted that CPN-UML is not only ready to participate but is also confident in securing a clear majority if the polls are conducted in a free, fair, and impartial manner. According to him, the party is waiting for the right moment and is equipped to handle any political situation that may arise in the near future.
Referring to a recent joint meeting involving President Ram Chandra Paudel, former prime ministers, and the current prime minister, Oli clarified that his party has never been against the electoral process. He noted that during the meeting, they discussed the importance of preventing regression and ensured that the House of Representatives should be reinstated promptly. He further mentioned that since the matter of house dissolution is currently sub-judice, the party will move forward in accordance with the final verdict of the court. While the President and the Prime Minister have been advocating for elections, Oli questioned the government’s sincerity, pointing out the lack of a peaceful environment on the ground.
The UML Chairman criticized the ongoing incidents of attacks on political leaders and the restrictions placed on their movement across the country. He argued that such an atmosphere of fear and insecurity is fundamentally incompatible with the principles of a democratic election. “Leaders are not allowed to travel freely and are facing constant attacks; is this how an election environment is created?” he questioned. Oli concluded by reiterating that while CPN-UML views elections as the primary tool for political stability, the government must first guarantee safety and democratic freedom for all political actors to ensure a credible outcome that reflects the true will of the people.
