Pokhara, 19 March| Iran has informed the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) that a projectile struck the Bushehr nuclear power plant located in the country’s southwest, raising fresh concerns over nuclear safety amid escalating regional tensions. According to a statement issued by the agency, the incident occurred on Tuesday evening, but no damage to the facility or injuries to personnel have been reported so far.

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi urged all parties involved in the ongoing conflict to exercise maximum restraint. He emphasized that any nuclear-related accident could have severe humanitarian and environmental consequences, potentially affecting not only the region but also global stability. Grossi reiterated the importance of protecting sensitive nuclear infrastructure during times of conflict and avoiding actions that could trigger catastrophic outcomes.

The Bushehr nuclear power plant is Iran’s only operational reactor and has been connected to the national power grid since 2011. It plays a critical role in the country’s energy production. The reported projectile incident has drawn international attention, particularly given the fragile geopolitical situation in the Middle East. Although Iran maintains that its nuclear program is entirely peaceful and intended for energy purposes, skepticism remains among countries such as the United States and Israel.

Since 2018, the United States has imposed strict economic sanctions on Iran over concerns related to its nuclear ambitions. Tensions between Iran, the United States, and Israel have continued to rise, with periodic confrontations further destabilizing the region. The latest incident adds another layer of complexity, especially as it involves a highly sensitive nuclear facility.

Meanwhile, disruptions in key maritime routes such as the Strait of Hormuz have already impacted global fuel supply chains, amplifying economic concerns worldwide. Analysts warn that if the conflict intensifies further, it could lead to broader regional instability and even global security challenges. The situation remains delicate, and international calls for diplomatic engagement and restraint are growing stronger.
