Pokhara, 19 February | In the concluding match of Group A in the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup, India registered a convincing 17-run victory over Netherlands in a high-scoring encounter played under lights on Wednesday night. Chasing a challenging target of 194 runs set by India, the Dutch side could only manage 176 runs in their allotted 20 overs, falling short despite some spirited contributions from their middle-order batsmen.
For Netherlands, Bas de Leede emerged as the top scorer with a brisk 33 runs off just 23 balls, smashing three boundaries and one six in his aggressive knock. Michael Levitt contributed 24 runs, while Colin Ackermann and Max O’Dowd added useful 23 and 20 runs respectively, showing glimpses of resistance but ultimately unable to chase down the total against a disciplined Indian bowling attack. Varun Chakravarthy was the pick of the bowlers for India, claiming three crucial wickets by giving away only 14 runs in his three overs of economical spin. Shivam Dube picked up two wickets, whereas Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya each took one to restrict the opposition in the death overs.
Earlier, after winning the toss and electing to bat first at the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, India posted a competitive 193 for 5 in 20 overs. Shivam Dube was the standout performer with the bat, blasting an explosive 66 runs from 31 deliveries that included six towering sixes and four crisp fours, providing the much-needed momentum in the middle phase. Captain Suryakumar Yadav scored a steady 34, Tilak Varma made 31, and Hardik Pandya chipped in with 30 runs, collectively ensuring India reached a defendable total. Ishan Kishan, who had played brilliantly against Pakistan earlier, was dismissed for 18 runs this time, somewhat disappointing the fans expecting another big knock.
On the bowling front for Netherlands, Logan van Beek was the most successful with three wickets, although he conceded 56 runs in his four overs. Aryan Dutt claimed two scalps, while Kyle Klein picked up one wicket, but their efforts were not enough to contain India’s powerful batting lineup. This win strengthens India’s position in the group standings and boosts their confidence heading into the knockout stages of the tournament. The match once again highlighted the depth in India’s squad, blending explosive batting with varied bowling options that proved decisive in the end.
