Pokhara, 11 April | The Nepal Communist Party (NCP) has strongly opposed the government’s proposal to ban student unions in schools and colleges, calling it a move against democratic values and citizens’ rights. The conclusion was reached during a central coordination committee meeting held at the party’s central office in Paris Danda on Saturday.

Speaking to the media after the meeting, party leader Jagannath Khatiwada stated that restricting student organizations would undermine fundamental rights, particularly the freedom of association among youth and students. According to him, such a decision reflects a regressive approach that does not align with the principles of an open and democratic society.

The controversy emerged after the government included a provision to dissolve student unions in its recently unveiled 100-point action plan. This proposal has triggered criticism from various political groups and organizations, with many arguing that it limits the political and social engagement of young citizens. The NCP has now formally joined the opposition, emphasizing that student organizations play a crucial role in leadership development and civic participation.

During the meeting, the party also raised concerns about potential restrictions on trade unions, stating that any attempt to curb such organizations would directly impact workers’ rights. Khatiwada highlighted that in a democratic system, individuals and groups must have the freedom to organize, express their views, and advocate for their interests without fear of suppression.

The NCP has urged the government to reconsider and withdraw the proposed provision, warning that it would stand firmly against any move that restricts public rights. The party has also indicated its willingness to collaborate with other political forces, student groups, and civil society organizations to build a unified stance on the issue.

Meanwhile, the next meeting of the central coordination committee is scheduled for Baisakh 3, where further decisions and strategies regarding this matter are expected to be announced.
