Pokhara, 9 September | The Gen-Z protesters have targeted the residences of top political leaders on the second day of their demonstrations. Despite the indefinite curfew order issued by the administration early in the morning, protesters defied it and gathered in front of the residences of Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba and Maoist Centre Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’.
Demonstrations were held at Deuba Chowk in Budhanilkantha, where Deuba resides, and in Khumaltar, where Prachanda lives. The protest at Prachanda’s residence in Khumaltar was particularly intense, with reports of stone pelting, which indicates the high level of public anger. Similarly, a protest was also held at the residence of Communications Minister Prithvi Subba Gurung in Sunakothi, Lalitpur, where protesters reportedly set fire to the property.
Following yesterday’s violent events, the government’s attempt to control the protests by imposing a curfew seems to have only fueled the youth’s anger. This form of protest makes it clear that the government’s repressive policies have increased public discontent and that the youth have begun to express their frustration and disgust with the traditional political leadership. This incident raises serious questions about the country’s political stability and puts additional pressure on the government to take immediate action for dialogue and problem-solving.
