Pokhara, 20 July – Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi reiterated on Wednesday China’s commitment to playing a constructive role in resolving the Iranian nuclear issue and fostering stability in the Middle East. His statements came during a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi in Tianjin, marking their fourth high-level dialogue in three months.

During their discussions, both foreign ministers reaffirmed their countries’ continued mutual support. Wang, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, underscored China’s long-standing opposition to the use or threat of force, advocating instead for the resolution of differences through dialogue and consultation. He particularly highlighted China’s appreciation for Iran’s commitment to not developing nuclear weapons, while respecting Tehran’s right to the peaceful use of nuclear energy. Beijing’s support for Iran in maintaining dialogue with various parties was also emphasized.

In response, Araghchi reiterated Iran’s firm commitment to not developing nuclear weapons, while asserting its legitimate right to the peaceful use of nuclear energy. He expressed Iran’s readiness to resume negotiations and consultations with all parties as soon as possible, on the basis of equality and respect, to seek a political resolution to the complex nuclear issue.

Foreign Minister Wang further stressed China’s unwavering support for Iran in safeguarding its national sovereignty and dignity. He affirmed Beijing’s stance against power politics and acts of bullying, and its commitment to helping Iran defend its legitimate rights through political negotiations. Araghchi, in turn, expressed gratitude for China’s invaluable support, highlighting Iran’s steadfast dedication to advancing relations with China and recognizing the comprehensive strategic partnership’s significant potential and broad prospects.

The meeting in Tianjin took place on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Foreign Ministers Council Meeting, where Wang and Araghchi, along with other foreign ministers from SCO member states, had gathered. This series of engagements underscores the deepening diplomatic ties between China and Iran, particularly as global and regional dynamics continue to evolve. China’s consistent call for dialogue and its principled opposition to unilateralism aim to inject positive momentum into the intricate Middle East situation, advocating for a negotiated solution to the Iranian nuclear program that considers the legitimate concerns of all involved parties.
