Pokhara, 9 September | The Kathmandu District Administration Office (DAO) has imposed an indefinite curfew within the Ring Road area, effective from 8:30 AM today (September 9), until further notice. Kathmandu Chief District Officer Chhabilal Rijal confirmed that the curfew order was re-imposed immediately after the expiry of the previous curfew at 5:00 AM, which was put in place following yesterday’s protest by Gen-Z youth and the tragic incident where 19 people died from police gunfire.
The curfew covers the entire area inside the Ring Road, spanning from Balkumari Bridge, Koteshwor Chowk, Sinamangal, Gaushala, Chabahil, Narayan Gopal Chowk, Gongabu, Balaju, Swayambhu, Kalanki, Balkhu, and extending to the Bagmati River Bridge. During the curfew period, all movement, public gatherings, processions, or any form of demonstrations are strictly prohibited, except for vehicles providing essential services. Yesterday’s youth protest against the ban on social media and corruption led to a massive confrontation, resulting in the unfortunate death of nineteen individuals by police bullets. The administration has taken this stringent measure to maintain peace and order in the wake of escalating tensions. The continuation of the curfew is expected to severely impact the daily life and movement of the general public within the capital’s core area.
