Pokhara, 9 September | The United Nations Human Rights Office of the High Commissioner (OHCHR) has called for a prompt and transparent investigation into the killings of Gen-Z youth during peaceful protests in Nepal. On Monday, spokesperson for the High Commissioner’s office, Ravina Shamdasani, expressed serious concern over the police violence against the Gen-Z movement, stating that they had received serious allegations of unnecessary and excessive use of force by security forces. She urged the Nepali government to conduct an immediate inquiry and hold the perpetrators accountable.

Shamdasani said the UN was shocked by the deaths and injuries of protesters in Nepal. “We are appalled by the reported deaths and injuries of protesters in Nepal today and call for a prompt and transparent investigation,” she stated. She added that the OHCHR has received credible reports of security forces using force that violates international standards against youth protesting against corruption and the government’s ban on social media platforms.

The spokesperson urged all security agencies and law enforcement officials to adhere to the basic principles on the use of force and firearms. She emphasized not only the need to respect but also to ensure citizens’ rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and expression. Shamdasani noted that Nepal has a vibrant democracy and an active civil society, and suggested that dialogue is the best way to address the concerns of the youth.

The High Commissioner’s office has also urged the government to reconsider its decision to control social media. She encouraged the government to abandon the path of repression and seek a peaceful resolution. This incident has raised serious questions about human rights and democratic values in Nepal, highlighting the urgent need for a prompt and effective solution.
