Pokhara, 1 January | The arrival of the English New Year has brought a significant surge in tourism across Nepal, with major tourist hubs witnessing a massive influx of both domestic and international visitors. From the vibrant streets of Thamel and Durbarmarg in Kathmandu to the scenic landscapes of Pokhara, Dhulikhel, Nagarkot, Sauraha, and Bhairahawa, the festive spirit is palpable. Popular destinations have been adorned with lights and decorations for Christmas and New Year celebrations, creating a festive atmosphere that has drawn crowds to hotels, malls, and local festivals. This seasonal peak has resulted in high occupancy rates, providing a much-needed boost to the country’s hospitality sector as the year begins.
According to Dinesh Kumar Chuke, President of the Hotel Association Federation of Nepal, the combination of regional festivals and the global New Year holiday has led to hotels being nearly full. He noted that the number of tourists has increased by approximately 20 to 25 percent compared to previous days, making it difficult for latecomers to secure rooms in prime tourist areas. Similarly, Suman Ghimire, proprietor of Jungle Safari Lodge in Sauraha, shared that his establishment is currently over 70 percent occupied, primarily by Nepali tourists. Despite initial concerns regarding the impact of political movements, unpredictable weather affecting flights, and ongoing road expansions, the current turnout has exceeded last year’s figures, signaling a robust recovery and a promising start for the Nepali tourism industry in the new year.
