Pokhara, 1 January | The Nepali Congress (NC) has officially submitted its closed list of candidates for the Proportional Representation (PR) category for the upcoming House of Representatives elections to the Election Commission. The finalized list of 110 candidates reflects a calculated balance between seasoned political veterans and the relatives of high-ranking figures, illustrating the party’s attempt to satisfy various internal factions. Among the most notable names is Arjun Narsingh KC, a veteran leader who has served as a minister and parliamentarian multiple times since the Panchayat era. Additionally, the list includes Sangya Pokharel Paudel, the daughter of President Ram Chandra Paudel, and Dr. Chandra Mohan Yadav, the son of Nepal’s first President, Dr. Ram Baran Yadav. Other prominent former ministers such as Romi Gauchan Thakali, Bhishma Angdembe, and Bhimsen Das Pradhan have also secured spots on the list.
The selection process was reportedly marked by intense internal friction between the establishment faction, led by Sher Bahadur Deuba, and the rival camp. To resolve the deadlock, the names were ultimately finalized based on a 60/40 power-sharing ratio. The party has also faced scrutiny for the inclusion of relatives of influential leaders, such as Rina Upreti and Goma KC, the wife and sister of former minister Bal Bahadur KC, respectively. To ensure a degree of fairness and new representation, the Nepali Congress established a strict criterion to exclude those who have already served as PR members since the 2008 Constituent Assembly. Furthermore, current provincial assembly members, local level officials, and those presently serving as PR representatives at the provincial level were barred from this federal list to allow for a broader circulation of opportunities within the party rank and file.
