Pokhara, 28 January | In a major shock to the Indian music industry and millions of fans worldwide, celebrated singer Arijit Singh has officially announced his retirement from playback singing. On Tuesday evening, the vocal powerhouse took to his social media platforms to declare that he will no longer take on new assignments as a “playback vocalist” for films. Sharing his New Year 2026 wishes, Singh penned a heartfelt note stating, “Thank you to everyone for giving me so much love as listeners all these years. I am happy to announce that I will not be taking any new assignments as a playback vocalist from now on. I am calling it off; it was a wonderful journey.”

This sudden announcement has left the Bollywood fraternity and fans in deep disbelief. Over the past 15 years, Arijit Singh had become the defining voice of romantic and soulful melodies in Indian cinema, rising to superstardom with the massive success of “Tum Hi Ho” from Aashiqui 2. His recent contribution includes the song “Matrubhumi” from the Salman Khan starrer film Battle of Galwan. While he is stepping away from the commercial film industry’s demands, the two-time National Award winner clarified that he is not quitting music altogether. Singh expressed his desire to explore music independently as a “small artist” and delve deeper into classical music. Having performed in Kathmandu just two years ago, his departure from playback singing marks the end of an era, though his legacy of chart-toppers like “Channa Mereya” and “Apna Bana Le” will continue to resonate for generations.
