Pokhara, 12 February | Dr. Shekhar Koirala, a prominent leader of the Nepali Congress and candidate for Morang Constituency No. 6, has stated that his current candidacy is primarily aimed at protecting the constitution and ensuring necessary reforms through parliamentary supremacy. Engaging with voters in Biratnagar, Dr. Koirala expressed confidence in securing a victory, noting that while he respects all opponents, including Binod Dhakal of the CPN-UML and Rubina Acharya of the RSP, their influence remains minimal compared to the deep-rooted organizational strength of the Congress party. Addressing previous speculations regarding internal friction, he clarified that Party President Gagan Thapa had supported his ticket despite past differences, reinforcing the image of a united party heading into the elections.

Regarding the party’s leadership dynamics, Dr. Koirala remarked that he has accepted Gagan Thapa’s leadership following the special convention, despite early hesitations from senior leaders. However, he voiced strong reservations about the trend of declaring a prime ministerial candidate before the elections, labeling it an “imitation of communist tactics.” He argued that according to the Nepali Congress statutes and parliamentary norms, the Prime Minister should only be decided by the elected members of the parliamentary party post-election. He emphasized that the Congress party has its own democratic traditions and should not abandon them for the sake of populist maneuvers or social media trends, which he believes often distort the practical reality of governance.

Dr. Koirala further commented on the current electoral system, asserting that achieving a single-party majority is virtually impossible under the existing framework. He dismissed claims of any party securing a majority as mere “leisurely propaganda,” insisting that the focus should instead be on building consensus for constitutional amendments and systemic improvements. On a personal note, while acknowledging his own potential to lead the nation, he stated that he is a person of sacrifice and dedication rather than one who seeks publicity. He concluded by urging voters to use their wisdom and not be swayed by the social media influence of the new political parties, reminding them that established organizations and local leaders are the ones who stand by citizens during times of crisis.
