Pokhara, 13 February | In a historic political shift, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has secured a landslide victory in the parliamentary elections held on Thursday, marking the end of a long era of political upheaval. According to unofficial results and local media reports published early Friday, the BNP has won 185 seats in the 300-member Jatiya Sangsad, comfortably crossing the simple majority threshold of 151. With counting still underway in several constituencies, party leadership expresses confidence in surpassing 200 seats to achieve a two-thirds majority. This election, the first since the student-led Gen-Z uprising in 2024 that ousted Sheikh Hasina, is seen as a definitive public mandate for democratic restoration and systemic reform.
Tarique Rahman, the BNP’s acting chairman and son of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, has emerged as the clear frontrunner for the post of Prime Minister after leading the campaign from the front following his return from 17 years of exile. His vision for a “New Bangladesh” includes strict anti-corruption measures, economic revitalization through foreign investment, and a revolutionary constitutional cap limiting the Prime Minister’s tenure to two terms or ten years. The absence of the Awami League, which was barred from participating, turned the race into a competitive battle between the BNP and the Jamaat-e-Islami. Jamaat-e-Islami has secured 56 seats, with its leader Shafiqur Rahman officially conceding defeat and pledging to serve as a constructive opposition in the new parliament.
Voter turnout in this landmark election is estimated to have exceeded 60 percent, a significant increase from the 42 percent recorded in the controversial 2024 January polls. Alongside the parliamentary vote, a crucial constitutional referendum was held, asking citizens to approve reforms under the “July Charter.” These reforms propose the reinstatement of a neutral caretaker government during elections, a bicameral legislative structure, and enhanced judicial independence. As the official results are finalized, the international community looks on with optimism, hoping that this peaceful transition will bring long-term stability and economic growth to the nation, fulfilling the aspirations of the youth who spearheaded the 2024 movement.
