Pokhara, 19 March| The historic Ghode Jatra festival, a cornerstone of the Kathmandu Valley’s cultural heritage, was celebrated today with immense enthusiasm and traditional fervor. Observed annually on the day of Chaitra Krishna Aunsi (the new moon day of the month of Chaitra), the festival holds such significance that the government declared a public holiday within the valley to facilitate the festivities. The centerpiece of the celebration remained the sprawling grounds of Tundikhel, where the Nepali Army organized a grand ceremonial event showcasing a unique blend of ancient mythology and modern military prowess.

During the special function at Tundikhel, the Nepali Army presented a series of breathtaking displays including equestrian skills (Ashwakala), motorcycle stunts, physical gymnastics, and various forms of traditional combat arts. The event was graced by the presence of high-ranking dignitaries, including the Right Honorable President, Vice President, and Prime Minister, highlighting the national importance of the occasion. The synchronized horse races and daring maneuvers performed by the army personnel served not only as a visual spectacle for the thousands of onlookers but also as a testament to the discipline and specialized training of the national defense forces.

According to deep-seated local folklore, the origins of Ghode Jatra are linked to the protection of the city’s children from a demon named Gurumapa. Legend has it that the demon lived in a tree on the southeastern side of Tundikhel and frequently terrorized the inhabitants by abducting and devouring children. Although the locals eventually managed to kill the demon, the fear that his malevolent spirit might rise again persisted. Consequently, the tradition of galloping horses over Tundikhel was established, believing that the thundering sound of hooves would trample the demon’s soul deep into the earth. To this day, offerings are left at the foot of the tree at night to appease Gurumapa. Simultaneously, in the neighboring city of Lalitpur, the festival is observed with its own unique flair, including a traditional race involving a blindfolded horse.
