Pokhara, 27 March| Dipak Kumar Sah has been appointed as Nepal’s Minister for Labour, Employment and Social Security, marking a significant addition to the cabinet led by Prime Minister Balen Shah. Representing the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), Sah secured his position after a decisive electoral victory from Mahottari-2, bringing with him a blend of academic expertise and international professional experience.

In the parliamentary elections held on February 21, Sah won with 32,722 votes, defeating former Labour Minister Sharat Singh Bhandari by a margin of 22,524 votes. His victory is widely regarded as a reflection of public trust in his reform-oriented agenda and his commitment to addressing long-standing challenges in the labour sector.

Born on March 23, 1991, in Mahottari, the 35-year-old minister has maintained a close connection with his constituency. His involvement in local development initiatives and community engagement has provided him with firsthand insights into the socio-economic issues faced by the people, particularly in rural areas. This grassroots understanding is expected to inform his policy decisions at the national level.

Sah’s academic background is rooted in public health, having completed his postgraduate studies in the field. He has received education from globally recognized institutions such as the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and the Institute of Medicine. His academic training has equipped him with analytical skills and a strong understanding of health systems and development frameworks.

Before entering full-time politics, Sah worked with international organizations including the World Health Organization (WHO) and FHI 360. His experience in these institutions exposed him to global best practices in governance, public health, and development, which he is now expected to adapt to Nepal’s context.

During his election campaign, Sah emphasized three core priorities: improving healthcare services, promoting youth self-employment, and ensuring corruption-free administration. As Labour Minister, he has reiterated his commitment to creating job opportunities, safeguarding workers’ rights, and strengthening social security mechanisms.

He has also indicated plans to address systemic issues in the labour sector, including foreign employment management, labour migration policies, and domestic job creation. His approach is expected to focus on long-term structural reforms rather than short-term interventions.

Sah’s appointment is seen as part of a broader effort to bring technically qualified individuals into governance. Observers believe that his combination of academic knowledge, international exposure, and grassroots experience could contribute to meaningful reforms in Nepal’s labour and employment sector.
