Pokhara, 8 September | Home Minister Sudhan Gurung has accused leaders of the old political parties of insulting and misinterpreting the Gen Z movement, warning them to change their approach and refrain from attempting to alter its historical significance.
Addressing a programme organised on the occasion of Gen Z Martyrs’ Day, Gurung said it was surprising that some leaders of traditional political parties were still offering different interpretations of the movement. He said the events of that day had become part of history and that no one could change or rewrite that history according to their interests.
The Home Minister warned that insulting the movement would amount to insulting millions of Nepali citizens. He urged political leaders to reform themselves, saying there was still time for them to change. According to Gurung, a new Nepal cannot be built with the same old political mindset and approach.
Gurung also said that those involved in the movement had not taken to the streets in pursuit of power. Referring to the events of Bhadra 23, he said they were not seeking political positions at that time and had neither a desire for power nor arrogance about authority even after entering government.
He said the present government had been entrusted with responsibility by the people and that its ministers were working to meet public expectations. Gurung added that he personally felt the weight of his responsibilities and remained concerned about whether he might fall short of giving his best to the people.
The Home Minister further alleged that young people who stood in favour of good governance had been shot by the previous government. He said the current government was working to address the demands and aspirations raised through the Gen Z movement.
Gurung also thanked Rastriya Swatantra Party Chairperson Rabi Lamichhane and Prime Minister Balen Shah for entrusting him with the responsibility of contributing to good governance. He added that he had been seeking advice and consultation from Lamichhane while carrying out his responsibilities as Home Minister.
