Pokhara, 17 February | Following a historic democratic transition, Bangladesh is set to welcome a popularly elected government today, Tuesday, sixteen months after the student-led uprising. Tarique Rahman, the Chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), will be officially appointed as the Prime Minister of Bangladesh. This marks the conclusion of the interim administration led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, which had been governing the nation during the transitional period. In a televised farewell address on Monday night, Chief Adviser Yunus announced his resignation, formally preparing to hand over executive authority to the newly elected leadership.

The political shift follows the general elections held on 12 February, where the BNP-led alliance secured a landslide victory, winning 212 seats and achieving a two-thirds majority in the 300-seat parliament. Additionally, the Jamaat-e-Islami alliance secured 77 seats. According to official reports, the swearing-in ceremony for the Prime Minister and the new cabinet members is scheduled for 4:00 PM today. Furthermore, the oath-taking ceremony for the newly elected Members of Parliament will be conducted by the Chief Election Commissioner at the South Plaza of the Parliament Building at 10:00 AM. This transition represents a significant milestone in Bangladesh’s journey toward political stability and democratic governance.
